Really, the biggest deciding factors for using Lightning over Madness are if you need the damage reduction for spike damage or 35m range. Generally, I use Lightning for single target and Madness for AoE fights, though you shouldn’t feel bad about using Madness for single target fights since the DPS difference is very small. Madness’ complexity comes in when you have to AoE/DoT spread since you have to switch to a priority system. You just have a completely static rotation. Compared to other specs with a rotation (not a priority), Madness is one of the easiest as well since there’s no resource management to worry about, so you also don’t have to think about when to use a strong versus a weak filler. The base rotation is also quite a bit easier than the priority for Lightning. It isn’t all bad though, Madness does perform much better in AoE situations since their Slow Mercy tactical item is far better than Lightning’s Elemental Convection. Madness also has a shorter max range (30m vs 35m), its mobility is weaker thanks to Force Lightning channels, and isn’t as strong defensively since it provides self-healing instead of damage reduction, though it can still benefit from the damage reduction provided by utilities. Welcome to my 6.0 guide for Madness sorc! In 6.1.1, Madness performs ever so slightly better on the training dummy than Lightning, though in actual combat, it will often perform slightly worse since it doesn’t synergize nearly as well with the Lightning Barrier utility.
